Bringing Your Girl to Australia: You Need a Visa

Once you meet a girl in the Philippines, China, Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia, you will want her to visit you and spend some time in Australia developing your relationship further. You will want to see if you're comfortable with each other not just in a 'holiday setting'. Will you be just as comfortable after spending 2 to 3 months together? Maybe not. Or maybe you will realise you found who you were looking for and you will want her to stay.

Australian visas

No one enters Australia without a visa. No, it's not just something applied to poor countries. The only exception is King Charlie. Even Donald needs a visa to Australia.

However, yes, they DO treat people from 'poor' countries differently. Whilst there are plenty of overstayers from the UK and US, they clamp down on the less-affluent countries more and scrutinise them in a much tougher fashion.

And Australian visas are not mere formalities. Not like renewing your driver's license or most official documents in Australia. Aussies are fairly reasonable to deal with when it comes to red tape, but NOT when it applies to anyone from overseas countries. Visas are amazingly difficult, and refusals are common.

So whether your lovely lady from South East Asia is wanting to come for a visit to stay with you for a while, or you are ready to settle down and build your future together, you need a visa for her. You don't have the right to give her permission to enter Australia. You can invite anyone you like into your house, but by law you need the permission of the Department of Home Affairs (Immigration). And that means a visa application.

Australian visa options for couples

Note that we will not be suggesting any 'clever' ways of bringing your lady to Australia. Regardless of what your mate tells you (or some genius on a Facebook group tells you), trying to be clever and applying for work visas or student visas or refugee visas? It doesn't work, and will result in you wasting time and money AND having a record of trying to play-the-system.

You have two workable options for bringing your girl to Australia.

Visitor visas (aka tourist visas)

This is for visiting and spending time together.

You look at these when your relationship is not yet mature enough for making a commitment to spending your lives together. With a visitor visa she may visit you for up to three months. If it's a multiple entry visa, she may return and stay for three months again.

• Not for working.
• Not for staying long-term. Don't think you can keep extending her stay like you can with visas in some other countries.
• And don't try to get a visa for a girl you haven't met before and have even a small bit of personal history together. If you meet a girl, you have to visit her in her own country before you move forward.

Partner visas (aka spouse visas, marriage visas)

Partner visas are for those who are committed to each other and intend to spend the rest of their lives together. Can be married or in existing de facto relationships.

These are not for couples who are not yet committed. They're definitely not for those who wish to 'try each other out'. If you're not already committed, get visitor visas or keep visiting her in her country until you know what you want. These visas are COMPLICATED and EXPENSIVE. Plus, you can only get two in a lifetime.

Types of partner visa

Prospective marriage visa (aka fiancee visa)

These are for couples who are committed to marrying (usually inside Australia) within 12 months of the visa grant.

Offshore partner visa

These are for couples who are already married or in an established de facto relationship, where the visa applicant remains in their country while the visa is being processed. Once granted, she can move to Australia and can stay. No need to return.

• She can work.
• She can study.
• She can get Medicare.
• She can travel back and forth from her country to Australia.

Most couples get these when they want to marry in the girl's country and where she is outside Australia when they apply and when the visa is granted.

Onshore partner visa

These are for couples who are already married or in an established de facto relationship, where the visa applicant is inside Australia (usually on a tourist visa) and remains in Australia while the visa is being processed. Once granted, she can remain in Australia. No need to return.

• She can work.
• She can study.
• She can get Medicare.
• She can travel back and forth from her country to Australia.

Most couples get these when they want to marry in Australia and want to get together a bit faster. These are where she is inside Australia when they apply and when the visa is granted.

Do it yourself, or get a professional to manage the visa application for you?
